{"id":32,"date":"2015-05-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-30T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/?p=32"},"modified":"2023-01-14T11:32:11","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T10:32:11","slug":"test-your-eye-resolution-easily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/?p=32","title":{"rendered":"Eye resolution test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have made a simple test image to test the resolution of your eyes on a phone,\u00a0phablet, tablet, laptop or PC!<\/p>\n<p>The most common result is it is pointless to go beyond <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>around <strong>1\/12000<\/strong> of the viewing distance<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Be SURE it is shown in the screens native resolution. e.g. 960 pixels should fill half a FullHD display. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(or use one of the added ones with your screens resolution)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Be SURE that your browser or your windows settings doesn&#8217;t do any scaling\/zooming\/smoothing, i.e. one pixel in the image is one pixel on the display. (If in doubt take a magnifying glass -or macro camera- and look closely on the screen, it should be like the mock-up later in this post)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ResolutionTestText_qFHD.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1383\" src=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ResolutionTestText_qFHD.png\" alt=\"ResolutionTestText_qFHD\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is the point where the single line pair is indistinguishable from the double line we are looking for (that is: where it looks like one continuous thick line)<\/p>\n<p>You will most likely find the finest resolution using the red or green figure.<\/p>\n<p>Use any prescribed glasses that you normally would for the distance &#8211; we are testing resolution<span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">, not focusing ability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: If you got a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">PenTile<\/span> display, usually the green will do fine!<\/strong> Have a look at this on <a href=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/?p=3390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">different subpixel arrangements<\/a>. Several pixel arrangement exists out there, that could have similar issues&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>To my surprise I found that my eyes could see substantially finer details than simpler tests done previously.<br \/>\nEDIT 20190824: Just got new glasses, and redid the test, and found around 1\/11400<span style=\"color: #999999;\"> (my original 1\/7000 was due to wrong glasses, as I no longer can focus at &#8216;any&#8217; distance with the same correction)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The feedback I have had so far range from around 1\/7000 over the most common around <strong>1\/12000 of the viewing distance<\/strong>\u00a0to two eagle eyed guys around 1\/26000(!)<\/p>\n<p>The coarsest 1\/7000 matches 0.5 arc minute, slightly finer than the 0.6&#8242; claimed here:\u00a0 <a class=\"bbc_url\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2010\/06\/iphone-4-retina-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/www.wired.com&#8230;one-4-retina-2\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though not as fine as down to the \u00a00,35&#8242; mentioned\u00a0here:\u00a0 <a class=\"bbc_url\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/173702\/why-retina-isnt-enough-feature\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/www.cultofmac&#8230;enough-feature\/<\/a><br \/>\nThe 0.35&#8242; is about 1\/10000 of the viewing distance.<\/p>\n<p>The most common around 1\/12000, is even finer at about 0.29 arc minute!!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are charts for a few other screen resolutions, that might make it easier to match your screen (sorry WordPress warps the table oddly on smaller (on larger resolutions just replicated to fill the screen with something)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">The rest are just notes and examples!<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Please note, this is NOT a limit for what is &#8216;needed&#8217; on any types of device, but a <strong>limit<\/strong> for what it <strong>would be pointless to go beyond<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Also note, that you MUST be able to focus at the relevant distances to use this test. If you got focus issues, you might need to swap glasses, or find a monitor with a DPI displaying the limit at a distance you actually can focus. E.g a modern smartphone that typically got a high DPI (if amoled, check if it is regular matrix or <a href=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/?p=3390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PENTILE<\/a>..).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">What is &#8216;needed&#8217; is a very subjective thing balancing such thing as price and (for battery-powered devices) stamina. But of course this can not be finer than the physical limit.<br \/>\nOur eyes\/brains are really great at smoothing out things, especially with moving pictures. The difference must be the bleeding of the blue and green into the red. A phenomena, that is usually a good thing when watching the display, as it helps making combinations of R+G+B to appear as one colour. So actually your eyes might be slightly <em>better<\/em> than what the test above shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">ADD 2015:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"> Some displays have less bleeding.
