They are simply overselling their displays pixel count by a factor 150%!!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let me use the above mentioned eye resolution test as an example:<\/p>\n<p>Se <a href=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/?p=32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the original post<\/a> for classic display.<\/p>\n<p>Lets start by the Samsung S8-<\/p>\n<p>First the complex combination producing white, that looks simple until you click it and see how complex it is composed&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Eye_resolution_test_White_Samsung.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3381\" 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note how the two separated lines works fine in one direction for all three basic colours, though with holes.<\/p>\n<p>But in the other direction, things gets a bit hairy for red and blue&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The two separated lines ought to be<\/p>\n<p>1 0 1<\/p>\n<p>for all.<\/p>\n<p>But as pixels do not exist sufficiently dense it is output as<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd 0 \u00bd 0<br \/>\n0 \u00bd 0 \u00bd<\/p>\n<p>Alternating<\/p>\n<p>When we get to where we ought have<\/p>\n<p>1 1<\/p>\n<p>we get<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd 0 \u00bd<br \/>\n0 1 0<\/p>\n<p>Alternating&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>So the sharpness of figures in red and blue is not quite as sharp as the green, due to the lack of pixels.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>This means<\/strong> that the lack of resolution will require you to be careful on what direction you are using if you do the test , as the subpixels in one direction is not as sharp as they ought to be for the test.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the Boe display of the Pro\u00b9 we get something somewhat similar<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Eye_resolution_test_White_Boe.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3382\" of the Boe layout then?<\/p>\n<p>If you look at the Samsung\u00a0 layout the greens can be said to be in a standard rectangular grid, but red and blue in a 41% larger diamond grid.<\/p>\n<p>But if you look at Boe&#8217;s two greens as one unit, it can be seen they are all in the same size grid. My GUESS is that this can help against some digital artefacts, by doing better subpixel rendering.<\/p>\n<p>I (accidentally) moved the image a non integral number of pixels, and the green looked like this odd image:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boe_Pro1_Green_partial_pixel_shift.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-3394\" src=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boe_Pro1_Green_partial_pixel_shift-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boe_Pro1_Green_partial_pixel_shift-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boe_Pro1_Green_partial_pixel_shift-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boe_Pro1_Green_partial_pixel_shift-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boe_Pro1_Green_partial_pixel_shift-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/eskerahn.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boe_Pro1_Green_partial_pixel_shift.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was on the Pro\u00b9 display (I can make the similar on the S8-).<\/p>\n<p>Here they could clearly have done some much more clever sub-pixel rendering than just drawing four &#8216;full pixel lines&#8217;s at half brightness. But it might be smoothing done at a high level not aware of the subpixel layout.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;.But at least the creative counting is not as bad as ALL camera colour sensors, where each R, G and B subpixel is each oversold as a full RGB pixel!!
